Difference between UTC and GMT

UTC = Coordinated Universal Time. Standard free of time zone and it does not observe daylight saving time. UTC operates on the basis of International Atomic Time (TAI)

GMT = Greenwich Meridian Time. British time zone which observes daylight saving time.

World is quickly moving away from GMT towards more universal standard i.e. UTC. Hence, here UTC is used for describing time zones in USA;

Four Standard Time Zones of USA

ET – Eastern Time Zone (-4 UTC or -5 GMT)
CT – Central Time Zone (-5 UTC or -6 GMT)
MT – Mountain Time Zone (-6 UTC or -7 GMT)
PT – Pacific Time Zone (-7 UTC or -8 GMT)

The difference of one hour between UTC and GMT is due to daylight saving hour being active in USA at the time of writing this post.

Seven USA Time Zones in Detail

New York (Easern Daylight Time or EDT) UTC Minus 4 hours

Chicago, Illinois (Central Daylight Time or CDT) UTC Minus 5 hours

Salt Lake City, Utah (Mountain Daylight Time or MDT) UTC Minus 6 hours

Phoenix, Arizona (Mountain Standard Time or MST) UTC Minus 7 hours

Los Angeles, California (Pacific Daylight Time or PDT) UTC Minus 7 hours

Anchorage, Alaska (Alaska Daylight Time AKT or AKDT) UTC Minus 8 hours

Honolulu, Hawaii (Hawaii Standar Time HST) UTC Minus 10 hours

How Many Time Zones Are There in the US?

There are 9 time zones by law in the USA and its dependencies. However, adding the time zones of 2 uninhabited US territories, Howland Island and Baker Island, brings the total count to 11 time zones.

USA has 4 standard time zones. In addition, Alaska, Hawaii, and 5 US dependencies with their own time zones. Neither Hawaii nor the 5 dependencies use Daylight Saving Time (DST), hence there are 6 corresponding DST time zones.

12th Time Zone

Howland Island and Baker Island is earth’s westernmost landmass which constitutes 12th time zone called Anywhere on Earth (AoE).

The word “Daylight” is added in the names of the time zones to denote the daylight saving hour being active.
